ETSC – The PIN Annual Conference, 20 June 2023

This year the ETSC Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Conference took place in Brussels on 20 June from 13.00-17.00.
During the event, ETSC presented the findings of the PIN Annual Report looking at progress in reducing road deaths and serious injuries across all PIN countries.
The conference was also the moment that the PIN Award was presented to Poland for outstanding progress on road safety.
Two panel discussions looked at important road safety issues currently being discussed at EU level – the safety of young drivers and medical fitness to drive. EFA participated in the event in the discussion panel “Young people”, together with Ellen Townsend, ETSC (moderator), Claire Depré, European Commission European Parliament, Cristina Rodenas, Permanent Representation of Spain to the EU (tbc) and Jacqueline Lacroix, DVR. ETSC – 17th Annual Road Safety Performance Index (PIN Report)

There were 20,678 deaths on EU roads in 2022, a collective increase of 4% compared to 2021.
Out of the 32 countries monitored by the PIN programme, only 13 registered a decrease in road deaths in 2022, compared to 2021. Slovenia was ranked first with a 25% reduction, followed by Latvia with 23% and Lithuania and Cyprus with 18%.
Road deaths increased in 19 PIN countries between 2021 and 2022. The EU has set a target to halve the number of road deaths by 2030, based on their level in 2019. Road deaths in the EU27 in 2022 were reduced collectively by 9% compared to 2019. Read the full article and download the PIN 2023 here.
“Learn to Drive. Learn CPR.”: A lifesaving initiative for the next generation of drivers

We are happy to introduce ‘Learn to Drive, Learn CPR’ an incredible collaboration between the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and the European Driving Schools Association (EFA) to empower young drivers and save lives. Our survey revealed that in 44% of European countries, citizens are required to undergo BLS courses for certain driving licenses. The ERC and the EFA are determined to make these courses mandatory across Europe, increasing the number of potential CPR responders. Support this lifesaving initiative and spread the word about the importance of bystander CPR. Together, we can create a generation of drivers ready to save lives!
EFA visits Croatia

On 2nd June EFA meets a Croatian delegation in Zagreb and presents the main European innovations in the field of road safety. The EFA delegation presents the advantages of being part of the European association and looks forward to a future and fruitful collaboration. Many topics were covered, such as legality, the gradual license and problems relating to novice drivers. In February 2024, a major international road safety event is planned in Zagreb. EFA is also expected to speak at the event.

EFA takes action in the EU Missions “Restore our ocean and waters”

The event was organized by the European Commission and the Municipality of Genova, with the support of the LIFE4MEDECA Preparatory Project and the Blue Mission Med Co-ordination and Support Action, as part of the celebrations for the Ocean Race Grand Finale (24 June – 2 July at the Ocean Live Park of Genova).
The aim of this event was to further disseminate the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030’ and engage with a broad range of stakeholders from waterfront cities, ports and fleets.
The role of driving schools and nautical schools is essential for spreading the culture of recycling among young people. European driving schools reach about 10 million students every year and can be a good opportunity to spread the message of environmental protection to their customers, especially the younger ones.
The collaboration with the ecoskate.it association is an example of how good practices can be developed to involve young people in recycling and sports activities. The Ecoskate.it association collects plastic bottle caps in schools and, after building skateboards with caps, organizes courses for kids.
Making Automated Vehicles Work for Better Transport Services: Regulating for Impact

How can automated transport services help reduce the environmental impact of mobility? How will they ensure passenger safety? What rules should apply to such new services that overlap with other, heavily regulated services like taxis and public transport? This report assesses where regulation should adapt and outlines principles for forward-looking regulation. It offers pragmatic recommendations to bring in better transport for citizens.
Assessing the impact of road safety agencies and health systems in traffic outcomes across 146 countries, 1994–2012

A new peer-reviewed paper published in Accident Analysis & Prevention has looked at the impact of road safety agencies and health systems across 146 countries from 1994 to 2012.
The authors conclude that road safety agencies have beneficial effects in the long run when targeting traffic injuries and health systems have beneficial effects when targeting traffic deaths. Road safety policies (RSPs) have emerged worldwide. Yet, while an important group of RSPs have been regarded as necessary to reduce traffic crashes and their consequences, the impact of others remain inconclusive. To advance knowledge on this debate, this article focuses on the potential effects of two RSPs: i) road safety agencies (RSAs) and ii) health systems (HS).
