“With the adjustment of the displacement to 250cc (from 400cc), the concept of a progressive driving licence at European level can finally be introduced. In most part of EU the practical exam for the A licence so far has been quite a repetition of the one for obtaining the A2 licence, with the result that many students waited for the twenty-fourth year to be able to access directly to motorcycles of higher displacements, without any kind of experience. A good result for road safety. A good result also for the motorcycle manufacturers, who were waiting for the change”.
The other important news is the possibility of being able to carry out the exam for the BE licence with a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission, without reporting any restrictions on the driving licence (code 78).
The Directive will have to be transposed by member countries by 1st November 2020.
